UCL Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Vacation Studentships

These are strategic awards to enable Undergraduate students from UCL Mechanical Engineering to carry out a research project over the Summer break, under the supervision of an academic. The purpose is to give students an opportunity to experience working in an active research environment, and to encourage our best Undergraduates to consider a career in Research.

Department:
UCL Mechanical Engineering
Duration of Studentship:
between 4 weeks (minimum) and 10 weeks (maximum)
Closing Date:
23rd February, 5pm
Studentship start date:
Summer 2018
Contact:
Dr Rebecca Shipley
Eligibility:
Open to all Undergraduates enrolled within UCL Mechanical Engineering.

Value and duration

The studentship will pay the London Living Wage (currently £10.20 per hour) and the duration of the project should be between 4 weeks (minimum) and 10 weeks (maximum). There is a consumables/ training budget of £200 per studentship, which should be carefully justified (if required) in the application. Supervising academics are responsible for any space requirements associated with the project.

Details of the Scheme

The Studentship committee (comprising academics from UCL Mechanical Engineering) invite nominations and proposals, to be received by 5pm on 23rd February 2018. Application outcomes will be announced by 5pm on 9th March 2018.

  • Applications should comprise a CV from the student (maximum 2 pages) and a project description (maximum 1 page) written in collaboration with the supervisor. Arial 11pt with 2cm margins should be used throughout.
  • The named supervisor must be within UCL Mechanical Engineering, and will actively supervise the project for the full duration.
  • Projects must have a clearly defined outcome and may not form part of a student’s degree programme. Proposers should think about how the studentship will provide the student with opportunities to explore and obtain research experience. Any requested consumables/ training budget should be clearly justified, and be within the £200 maximum.
  • Successful candidates will be required to write a 2-page report at the conclusion of their studentship, and contribute to publicity to raise the profile of this scheme.
  • Completed applications should be sent to Monique Conybeare (conybeare@ucl.ac.uk) by the application deadline.

Review Criteria

Proposals will be assessed based on their:

  • Quality
  • Planning and project management
  • Benefit to the student in terms of training, skills development and exposure to research (including supervision arrangements)
  • Track record and academic potential of the student

Further Information

The studentship committee will be chaired by Dr Rebecca Shipley (rebecca.shipley@ucl.ac.uk) who can be contacted for further details.
