SUMMARY:IoP – Environmental Physics Group – Oceans
DESCRIPTION: 

The Environmental Physics Group holds its main annual event based on a different theme each year.  In 2019 we have chosen “Oceans” as the theme and our afternoon event on 23 October will explore how oceans drive the climate and how their status both determines and is determined by the climate.  We will have three talks from eminent speakers who are all experts in various aspects of the relationship between oceans and the climate:

Dr Richard Wood is head of oceans and climate at the UK’s Met Office and he will explain how the oceans are the engine of the climate and how they influence the environment at all scales of time and distance.
Dr Jon Robson, from the University of Reading, will describe in more detail how ocean modelling is performed and how this can be used in climate modelling.
Professor Peter Wadhams is an acknowledged expert on the Arctic Ocean and how our changing climate is affecting it.  His book “A Farewell to Ice”, on which his lecture is based, makes sober reading and serves as a warning to us all that we must take better care of the environment to avoid damaging our climate, and the Arctic, further.

The afternoon event is aimed at providing detailed insights into climate science as applied to oceans and is organised by Dr Hugh Deighton, the chair of the Environmental Physics Group, who spent many years implementing meteorological data processing systems for Europe’s Meteosat satellite programme, the outputs from which inform much of the recent climate analysis across the world’s meteorology community.
The EPG afternoon session should complement the morning interactive session on climate change, which is being held by the Physics Communicators Group.
