Research Area

Hydro-acoustics

Research Outline

My research focusses on underwater-radiated noise from marine propellers. I am using computational methods to develop a better understanding of different noise generating mechanisms with a view to reducing the overall acoustic signature of the propeller.

About Tom Smith

I studied Mathematics at Southampton University before undertaking an MSc in Maritime Engineering Science, also at Southampton. I then worked as a Naval Architect at BMT Defence Services in Bath for 4 years, working on hydrodynamics, stability and early-stage ship design.
