Eoin Finnerty

Academic Background

Eoin began studying Applied Physics and Instrumentation in the Institute of Technology Tallaght in Dublin 2002, before transferring to the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology to complete his undergraduate degree.

After several years travelling and working, he returned to study Experimental Physics in NUI Maynooth. His research project during this time was to examine the Zeeman splitting of Rubidium using magnetic resonance. He then went on to study Medical Physics in NUI Galway and was awarded an M.Sc in 2012. The course focussed strongly on the use of ionising radiation in medicine, and his project was to explore the use of gold nanoparticles to enhance the efficacy of oncological radiotherapy.

During this time, he developed an interest in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. He was accepted into University College London in 2012, and became part of the Cancer Imaging Group under Dr. Simon Walker-Samuel in the Centre for Advanced Biomedical Research. The object of his thesis was to investigate the use of advance MRI methods (specifically Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping) in diseases of the liver.

He is currently a post-doctoral researcher under Dr. Rebecca Shipley and Dr. Walker-Samuel, where he is developing imaging protocols for the High Resolution Episcopic Microscope that will assist in the modelling of tumour drug delivery.

Eoin is funded through a UCL Post-Break Award (EPSRC) awarded to Dr Rebecca Shipley.
