The Project

Have a look at the poster for the project

Our aim was to design and manufacture an unmanned aircraft system under IMechE Regulations for entry into the 2017 UAS Challenge.
The aircraft should be able to autonomously take-off, navigate predefined waypoints, deliver payloads on target and safely land.
We determined major design goals from competition requirements and primarily focused on the mass of the UAS Vehicle and its ability to fly at low airspeeds whilst laden to accurately deliver payloads.

The Design

We designed a fixed wing, high lift and thrust-to-weight ratio, autonomous aircraft, able to carry 2.5kg of payloads. Carbon fibre struts, extruded polystyrene and other high strength-to-weight ratio materials allows the UAS to reach an unladen mass of 4.4kg. The aircraft is able to maintain flight at an airspeed of 10m/s and accurately deliver the payloads. Manufacture and assembly of the aircraft was fully undertaken by the team.
