London Ocean Group

London-based academic researchers with an interest in the ocean

We are London-based academic researchers with an interest in the ocean. We come from a very wide range of London universities and institutions, and we include physical and biological researchers, social scientists, and those who study risk, policy and law.

The group is currently coordinated by Dr Helen Czerski of UCL. We welcome members from any area of ocean study who either live or work in London, and who would like to connect with others in these fields. Currently we have about 150 members, and we are still growing.

The long-term aim is to move towards being a virtual oceanography institution for London, with a cross-disciplinary community that can share knowledge and build collaborations based on those new links.

What is London Ocean Group?

We provide a forum for researchers to get to know each other and to explore new interdisciplinary research topics. We hold meetings every 6-8 weeks, a large annual workshop each summer, and a range of other training and engagement activities.

As well as our academic meetings, we have upcoming workshops and smaller events aimed at bridging the gaps between disciplines. Our London Ocean Diary page has a list of what is currently planned, and if you have suggestions for future meetings, please do let us know. Our events include seminars, films, outreach events, policy discussions and more.
