The Project

The refugee crisis, stemming mainly from the Middle East, has deteriorated substantially with the absence of diplomacy and consequently, innovative temporary housing solutions are needed now more than ever.
Our project aims to provide a high quality, semi-permanent shelter for a family of five, which can effortlessly be deployed and recalled. The shelter has been designed for longevity with an emphasis on ensuring retrievability and reusability, reducing future costs and environmental impact. The structure was also designed to have better thermal and weather resistance than other solutions in the market, creating a living environment with increased comfort.

The Design

The shelter design is inspired by the expansion mechanism of a telescope, where each panel is shorter and narrower than the previous one, allowing compact packing (2.4 x 3.35 x 1.117 m) for easier transportation. The deployment of the shelter eradicates the need for tools, trained personnel and excessive man-hours, making it ideal for an emergency situation.
A living area of 19.4 m2 was achieved, exceeding minimum area of 17.5 m2 for a family of five recommended in the Sphere Handbook, Humanitarian charter and minimum standards. Additionally, a photovoltaic and energy storage system was integrated into the design to supply enough electricity for essential minor electrical appliances. Since the thermal capacity of the HIER TIER shelter is critical to its success, we are proud to say that a comfortable internal temperature of 18°C can be maintained at an outside temperature of -7°C with the provisioned 2.906 kW kerosene heater.
